AIIMS MDS New Pattern Analysis 2019

Dear friends
AIIMS PG|MDS  is the most constantly updated exam of the country.
In Latest announcement, AIIMS has introduced 7 different types of MCQs applicable for the from July Session 2019, that is for AIIMS Exam to be held on Nov 2019 also.
Now, you don’t need to panic, trust me your hard work won’t go waste
In my opinion we need to carefully read and understand the changes announced by AIIMS.
MAJOR CHANGES
• 7 types of MCQs (including Single best response, Multiple true false, Match the following, Sequential
arrangement, Multiple Completion, Assertion-Reason, Extended matching)
• Different marking scheme for each question type
• Time – 180 minutes for 200 MCQs (earlier it was 90 minutes for 90 MCQs)
Important Footnote (Please read twice)
‘MAJORITY OF THE MCQS FOR THE JULY 2019 MD/MS/MDS EXAMINATION SHALL BE OF THE SINGLE BEST RESPONSE TYPE’
Now let’s understand each one
Type 1 – Single Best Answer – Traditional pattern
• MAJORITY OF THE MCQS FOR THE JULY 2019 MD/MS/MDS EXAMINATION SHALL BE OF THE SINGLE BEST RESPONSE TYPE – so relax
• +1 (for correct answer) and -1/3 (for wrong answer). This has been the pattern followed till last
AIIMS Nov 2018 Exam
Example –
Q- How many types of MCQs have been introduced in AIIMS PG|MDS?
A. 5 B. 6
C. 7 D. 8
Ans – C. 7
My Analysis : This is usual type of AIIMS questions which previously used to be asked ,  you all often find in past papers.
Type 2 – Multiple True-False
• Common stem followed by 5 statements; each statement has to be marked True/False
• This pattern resembles PGI questions and can be practiced from previous years’ PGI papers.
• +1/5 (for correct answer) and -1/5 (for wrong answer) for each statement.
Example –
Q – About AIIMS PG|MDS 2019, the following statements are true/false.
A. Duration of examination is 180 minutes
B. Number of questions is 210
C. 7 types of MCQs will be asked
D. Exam will be in English
E. Exam will be conducted in a single shift on Nov 2019.
Ans. A. True B. False (Total number of questions is 200) C. True D. True E. True
My Analysis : These are  tricky questions and very similar to PGI chandigarh exam questions. However there is a major difference here. The AIIMS Guidelines say , “‘ each option will have to be marked” if you decide to attempt the question. what it means is that if u are sure about most options, you attempt. if you are unsure about 3 or more options , better not to attempt. this is because if u attempt, you will have to mark each option as T / F. You can not pick and choose options like in Chandigarh PGI Exam.
Type 3 – Match the Following
• Two columns with 4 items in one column which have to be matched with items in second column
(which can have more than 4 items) for each alternative.
• Again, PGI previous years’ have similar questions. With multiple options available for matching,
these questions should be relatively easier to attempt.
• +1/4 (for correct answer) and -1/4 (for wrong answer)
Example –
1. AIIMS Exam Date       a. 200
2. Total questions          b. 5/5/2019
3. Duration (min)            c. 210
4. No of shifts                d. 180
e. 1
f. 300
Ans. 1-b, 2-a, 3-d, 4-e
My Analysis : Such type of MCQs are often seen in some state universities exams and variants are also seen in PGI Chandigarh exam. Expected to be easy and scoring. A bit of practice is needed.
Type 4 Sequential Arrangement
• A list of items that have to be arranged in order as indicated.
• This is a new question type. To tackle this MCQ, basically we need to focus on various pointers to
differentiate similar conditions/pathologies and we need to keep in mind how these pathologies
compare in different aspects. Beware, this type has a 100% negative marking – Attempt only if you
are reasonably confident.
• +1 (for correct answer) and -1 (wrong answer).
Example –
Q. Arrange these PG exams in the order of number of questions asked in exam – least number of
questions first and maximum number of questions last.
1. AIIMS
2. PGI
3. NEET
Ans. – 1-2-3
My Analysis: Expect these type of questions to be very scoring. Questions like order of  GCS and cause of meningitis in children and correct order of tooth eruption sequence will be asked.Practice a few and you will be ready to score well.
Type 5 Multiple Completion
• 4 statements of which one or more may be correct and SINGLE ANSWER has to be marked according
to the given key.
(1) If a, b, c are correct
(2) If a and c are correct
(3) If b and d are correct
(4) If all four (a, b, c & d) are correct
• This type is an easier version of PGI type questions where we have to mark a single answer. Also, the
stakes are low here. Only thing, read the key carefully and then mark.
• +1/4 (for correct answer) and -1/4 (for wrong answer).
Example –
Q. AIIMS new MCQ types include
a. Multiple true-false
b. Assertion Reason
c. Sequential arrangement
d. Subjective questions
Ans. 1 (a,b,c are correct)
My Analysis: Similar in a way (not exactly , but in principle ) to the type of questions asked in PGI chandigarh exam. One or more option may be correct and you can mark 1 or more option. you will get credit for what you marked correctly, just like in PGI Exam. If in doubt, leave the option. Mark only what you know . Typically PGI Chandigarh exam Strategy!!!

Type 6 Assertion Reason
• This type has been asked in AIIMS-PMT for many years now and has been a trademark for AIIMS
MBBS entrance.
• These are tricky questions and we need to correlate basic concepts to tackle these as we need to
know how the given two statements are related to each other.
• +1/4 (for correct answer) -1/4 (for wrong answer).
Example –
A. AIIMS is the most sought after institute in the country.
B. AIIMS has the latest technology in medical science.
Ans – 1. Both are true and B is correct explanation of A
My Analysis : These questions will check your conceptual knowledge and if you are good in understanding a disease, these should be easy to score. not expected to be many in exam though.

Type 7 Extended Matching
• Each question has a theme, list of options, main lead question and a number of scenarios. Novel type
of question.
• Major issue is the length of the question body since the scenarios are provided as large paragraphs
with details about the condition/pathology. So be sure to read it swiftly and clearly so that you don’t
lose time. Again, the most important point is to know how similar conditions differ in certain aspects
to choose among the given options’ list.
• +1/ No of scenarios; -1/ No of scenarios
• +1/2 (for correct answer) -1/2 (for wrong answer) If number of scenario are equal to 2
Example –
Theme – PG ENTRANCE EXAM
Answer option list –
a. AIIMS
b. NEET
c. PGI
d. NIMHANS
e. JIPMER
Lead Question –
For the given scenario, choose the PG exam from the above given list.
Scenario –
This exam is one of the toughest in the country. For the most sought after medical college, it is a test of
intellect rather than just factual information. The latest MCQ pattern (7 types of questions) makes the
exam even more exciting and challenging for the medical aspirants. Identify this institute.
Ans – a. AIIMS
My Analysis:  The most tricky among all  and the scoring system is also a bit confusing here( contradictory wording used in AIIMS prospectus) . Nevertheless what it means is that they will pick a theme, example Seizure . then they will put up a list of types of seizure . then they will give you a lead, followed  by 2 or more scenarios.  you will have to read those scenarios and mark the option which best fits in them. point to understand is that scoring will depend upon the number of scenarios given. and these will be very time consuming . so be careful not to waste too much time if you are not confident.
My Guess: Majority of EMI/EMQ questions will come from Oral Pathology , Medicine, Surgery, Ortho . Devote good time to revise clinical aspects of these subjects.

TO SUMMARISE
  • AIIMS  has made it very intriguing. The paper is now going to be highly clinical and concept based.
  • Subject and knowledge of topics will be same . if you are good and know the topic, you can answer anything easily. just practice new such examples more . For AIIMS, the days to mug up guides are over.
  • The upcoming nov 2019 aspirants need not to panic since changes will not be very exhaustive, although examples of each questions types will come in exam and will be the rank deciders !
  • AIIMS Exam pattern has tilted slightly in favour of clinical subjects ( has been case in last few yr.).
  • List of common organisms and drug of choice, sequence of milestones etc becomes very very important and be careful about the exact sequence as given in standard texts, since the list is very different in various books and guides. one wrong sequence will put u pay heavily.
  • Finally , the gap between AIIMS & PGI Chandigarh exam has narroed down significantly. Multiple  options, match the column, marking what you know are the strategies followed in PGI exam.

REMEMBER : IF YOU ARE GOOD WITH YOUR WEAPONS ( CONCEPTS & TOPICS), THE TYPE OF BATTLE (TYPE OF QUESTON) DOES NOT MATTER !!!
We will come up with more updates about the new AIIMS pattern in future.
Keep reading & keep learning
P.S: For more details, will advise you to check the AIIMS Prospectus…
